Awasi launches South America's first dedicated Puma Foundation

NATURE

30/11/2017 AWASI PATAGONIA
South America’s most famous national park, Torres del Paine, is home to jagged mountains, milky blue glaciers and majestic big cats.

However, as the numbers of visitors increase each year, pumas, guanacos, and other native species such as Darwin’s Rhea, are forced to leave the boundaries of the park in search of new territories and food

This is when they come under threat.

Unable to sit by and watch these beautiful creatures fall into decline, the Awasi team founded South America's first Puma Foundation.

Expanding our private reserve - with the support of the Awasi partners we increased the reserve by 8 times its original size - Awasi Patagonia now sits in a protected area spanning 5,000 hectares (12,300 acres).

Working together with scientists, we are monitoring the movements of Patagonia's wildlife, using hidden cameras to plot their habits and learn about their behavior.

Awasi guests can now go puma tracking from the lodge, helping the conservation team to check the hidden cameras and monitor the wildlife.
